Australian domination in the IPL continued as the two Shanes - Watson and Warne - starred with bat and ball respectively to power Rajasthan Royals to their maiden victory in the tournament, fittingly in front of their home crowd at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium. Shane Warne's 3 for 19 restricted Kings XI Punjab to what appeared to be a par score of 166 but the target was overhauled fairly comfortably, thanks to a fiery 49-ball 76 by Watson, supported by an unbeaten 36 by the young Ravindra Jadeja.

Rajasthan were pegged back early in their chase, losing their openers with the score on 19. Sreesanth induced a thin edge off his first delivery to send back Mohammad Kaif, while Yusuf Pathan returned a leading edge while trying to whip Brett Lee across the line. Kamran Akmal, fresh off a Twenty20 international for Pakistan against Bangladesh on Sunday, fended off a verbal assault from Sreesanth before falling to a well-judged catch by Piyush Chawla running backwards at deepish mid-on.

The fall of the third wicket put Watson on the defensive briefly. Sensing the need to build a partnership, he held one end up and waited patiently for the bad deliveries. Irfan Pathan got a couple to beat the bat but Punjab weren't prepared for the onslaught that was to come. One particular heave from Watson was so powerful it split the bat in half and yet just carried on over the long-on boundary. Wielding a new bat, Watson took on James Hopes, lofting one over his head on one knee, before nearly decapitating Irfan with a straight drive.

That shot dented not only Irfan's psyche but also that of the Punjab side as Watson and Darren Lehmann added 51 off 39 balls. The partnership got the home crowd more animated as Watson approached his fifty by launching one over the roof at cow corner. However, just before the stroke of 100, Lehmann was squared up by an Irfan delivery which jagged back in sharply.

The dismissal brought Jadeja, one of India's Under-19 stars, to the middle and his reputation as a big hitter was justified with some cracking strokes through the off side. As if armed with a license to destroy, he flat-batted Sreesanth past the covers before lashing the same bowler past deep backward point. Lee too wasn't spared and the ball scorched to the boundary almost as quickly as the ball left his hand. The pair brought up their 50 stand off a mere 29 balls before Watson aptly sealed the deal with a whip past midwicket.

Punjab had the luck with the toss but their power-packed top order, boosted by Mahela Jayawardene's inclusion, couldn't quite push on, with the exception of Yuvraj Singh. The flat deck left very little margin for error and the Punjab batsmen picked up boundaries aplenty by merely driving through the line, adjusting easily to the length of the ball. Karan Goel and Kumar Sangakkara showed scant respect to Siddharth Trivedi and Munaf Patel, fetching boundaries regularly. Unfortunately, both perished against the run of play. Munaf had the last laugh, sending Goel's off stump out of the ground with a yorker while Warne ended Sangakkara's eight-ball cameo with a sharp return catch. Hopes, fresh after his 71 in the opening game, became Warne's second victim after attempting a slog. Hopes was subdued by the fall of wickets at the other end and his attempt at hitting out only cost him his wicket.

Yuvraj, the Punjab captain, signalled his arrival with a blazing straight drive off his first ball. Rajasthan however had only themselves to blame for not halting his charge. Lehmann spilled a skier at mid-off when Yuvraj was on 15 and there was further shock when Mohammad Kaif, one of the safest catchers, made a complete mess of a straightforward chance at point with Yuvraj at 29.

Yuvraj greeted Trivedi's return with a merciless biff past extra cover before taking on the spinners. Dinesh Salunkhe and Yusuf were clattered on the roof over deep midwicket, his third six bringing up his half-century. However, it was 'that' man Warne again who stemmed the rot, cleverly cutting back on the pace and deceiving Yuvraj on the sweep. While the other spinners were getting pasted, Warne kept the pressure from his end and gave little away. Punjab had lost three wickets for no run and it took a 11-ball 24 by Piyush Chawla to push them to what turned out to be only a satisfactory score.

Deccan Chargers promise good IPL entertainment

V.V.S. Laxman, the captain of Deccan Chargers, the Hyderabad team in the Indian Premier League, feels excited to lead the side which has international stars like Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs and Shahid Afridi.

Confident of a good show in the tournament, he promised good entertainment for the fans by his team, a franchise of English daily Deccan Chronicle.

The name, logo, flag and website of the team were launched at a glittering function here Tuesday night amidst drum beats and colourful dances by Bollywood actress Sameera Reddy and a troupe of Casino girls.

"It is a huge honour to lead the side. I am very excited. We have a balanced side," the stylish batsman told the gathering at Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC).

Though not a regular face in the national side for one-day internationals, Laxman hopes that the Twenty20 format would prove a real entertainer. "It is the most exciting thing to happen since Kerry Packer Series in early 1970s," he said echoing the views expressed by his deputy Gilchrist in a recorded message.

Later, talking to media persons, Laxman said he was yet to decide the batting line-up. He was asked about the position he would be batting at as the team has many hard-hitters like Gilchrist, Symonds, Gibbs and Afridi.

The captain is also confident that he would face no problems in handling players like Symonds, who was involved in many a spat with Indian players during the recent series in Australia.

"As Gilchrist rightly said, there will only be a boundary line and no boundaries between players. The players from different countries will gel with each other," he said.

"I am happy to have these two amazing cricketers and the match-winning players," he said referring to the two Australians.

Robin Singh, the coach of Deccan Chargers, also does not see any problem in handling the players. "They are thorough professionals. There should be no problems," he said.

Though none of the foreign players turned up for the event, some Indian players including Rohit Sharma were introduced to the gathering.

The team also has players like Chaminda Vaas, Chamara Silva and Nuwan Zoysa of Sri Lanka, Scott Styris of New Zealand and India's national player R.P. Singh besides some local youngsters.

Earlier, the team's logo, a charging bull, was unveiled. "Bull signifies strength, power and aggression," said J. Krishnan, president and CEO of Deccan Chargers.

Minister for Labour and Employment and president of Hyderabad Cricket Association G. Vinod handed over the team's flag to Laxman.

"The red colour in the flag stands for boldness, aggression and dominance while the gold is a divine colour and signifies fortune and victory," said Krishnan.

"Deccan Chronicle is committed to growth of sports, especially cricket. So when the opportunity to bid for this unique tournament came we went after it. We had a well thought out strategy in terms of who will be in the team," he said.

The largest-circulated English daily in Andhra Pradesh wants to take cricket to the grassroots level in the catchments area of Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa.

"We will take the game to college and school level and set up international level academies to help talented youngsters to come up," Krishnan said.

IPL Hyderabad team - Deccan Chargers

Deccan Chronicle, the owner of the Hyderabad team of the DLF Indian Premier League, has named the team Deccan Chargers.

V V S Laxman, captain, Deccan Chargers, said: "It is an honour to be the captain of such a wonderful team of international players - each a match winner in his own right. The DLF IPL Twenty20 would also provide a great platform for our younger players to play side-by-side with international greats and hone their skills."

Adam Gilchrist has been named the vice captain of Deccan Chargers. Besides Laxman and Gilchirst, the team includes Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs, Shahid Afridi, Rohit Sharma, Rudra Pratap Singh, Scott Styris, Chaminda Vaas and Nuwan Zoysa.

The Chargers were among the most aggressive bidders during the first Indian Premier League player auction. The franchise added a lot of explosive power in batting by acquiring some renown big hitters like Adam Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Shahid Afridi, Scott Styris and Herschelle Gibbs. In addition to all these players, the franchise also includes the Indian test player VVS Laxman, who is a Hyderabad local. They are also employing the services of well known pacers R.P. Singh, Nuwan Zoysa and Chaminda Vaas. It's been announced by the franchise that Laxman will captain the side during the tournament.^[2][3]
VVS Laxman was supposed to be the Icon Player for Chargers, but this meant that the players mentioned above could not be bought as Icon Player's earn 15% more than the next highest earner in the team. However, VVS Laxman relinquished his Icon Player Status, and instead of earning $1 million like other Icon players he earns $375,000, which allows the team to buy the big names and still remain under the salary cap.^[4]
